The long run. Or else no search firm would be in business. The Private sector uses search firms all the time. I have used them to hire for IT projects. If a candidate does not work out, normally I am not charged a fee and the candidate is replaced at no extra cost.

ECU just happens to be caught up in a chapter where it has not worked out. Search firms are not the devil. Search firms should have processes and methods of fully vetting candidates (background, salary, etc) and their overall fit before providing candidates to consider to a client. Then the University should also vet the candidates as well through their processes and methods. Basically 2 stages. By the time we get to the top 3 candidates, they should have all been through the equivalent of an IRS audit essentially so they know we mean business at ECU.
