The Woodpeckers sign a star
The big sports story in North Carolina in the last week was the departure of star Charlotte Hornets guard Kemba Walker, reflecting the Michael Jordan-led franchise's continued ineptitude. But a Fayetteville Observer story that a friend sent me this week shows the positive side of pro sports: the Fayetteville Woodpeckers minor league baseball team recently signed 5-year-old Jacob Moore of Lumberton to a one-day contract.
That meant a boy diagnosed with Neuroblastoma cancer and a veteran of the medical wards spent a day practicing baseball and delivering the game ball before the Woodpeckers played the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.
"In scouting potential players, the Houston Astros seek individuals that exhibit courage, strength, and perseverance,” team president Mark Zarthar said in a news release. “Jacob embodies the perfect Astro."
