ECU needs to give students a reason to attend beyond "Servire."

1) $1B endowment campaign
We need to be a beacon of excellence, a place where applicants from across the US sweat whether or not they'll get in. This requires increasing our endowment so we can offer more scholarships, improve facilities (classrooms & labs), retain great researchers/faculty, and launch a real marketing campaign, etc. This will increase demand which in turn increases GPAs, SATs, which in turn increases demand. Some will say we don't have the alumni to do a $1B campaign. I think we do. Either way, I say we go for it and see what happens. If we land at $500M, it's a lot better than where we are.

2) Enroll more out of state kids (for five years)
ECU is allowed to admit a student body consisting of no more than18% (?) from out of state. UNC Chapel Hill is supposed to operate under the same rule, but year after year they admit more out of staters and then apologize and promise to correct it. But they don't. They just keep bringing in bright kids from all over the US. Why don't we? Let's admit 25% from out of state for the next five years and use the magnified revenue to fund facility and faculty needs until the NC legislature forces us to stop. When they do, make them reign in UNC Chapel Hill, too. If they don't, we keep going.

We will die on the vine if we don't land a leader that puts an aspirational point on the wall and gets all of us, and students, excited. Sometimes I think we believe the rhetoric out of UNC BOG, that we need to know our place, that "Servire" means mediocrity. I say we kick the walls down and make us slow down.
