The company does the marketing/recruiting...

They put up a LOT of money up front to recruit students to the programs (mainly online programs). UNC-W has primarily used them for their RN to BSN program. They even put recruiters in hospitals like Vidant. The recruiters are employees of the company (Academic Partnerships in this case) but represent the school. The company runs call centers to answer questions and puts out lots of online ads.

They’re great for starting a program from scratch because the school doesn’t have to pay for the upfront marketing costs. The company takes 50% or more of the tuition, but the school still gets to keep their per-credit-hour appropriations from the UNC-system.
