Seems to me the only way to make it work fairly is 16 teams. 1 champ from

each FBS conference including the non cartel leagues and 6 wild card. Seedings would be determined by CFP Poll ranking but would be a true playoff with conference champs. Top teams would have to get buys through the first 3 rounds. That would be their incentive for finishing in the Top 4 of the CFP poll.

Hypothetically this year would have been SEC-LSU, P12-Oregon, B12-Oklahoma, B10-Ohio State, ACC-Clemson, AAC-Memphis, MWC-Boise St, CUSA-FAU, MAC-Miami OH, and SB-App St. Then the wild cards most likely go to Alabama, Georgia, Baylor, Wisconsin, Florida, and Penn St.

First round the Top 4 seeded teams get a buy. 5 plays 16, 6 plays 15, 7 plays 14, 8 plays 13, 9 plays 12, 10 plays 11.

Second round would be buys for #1 and #2. 3 plays winner of 5/16, 4 plays 6/15, 7/14 plays plays 10/11, 8/13 plays 9/12.

Third Round-1 and 2 have buy. 3/5/16 winner plays 7/14/10/11, 4/6/15 plays 8/13/9/12.

Semi Final-1 plays 3/5/16/7/14/10/11 winner & 2 plays 4/6/15/8/13/9/12 winner

Championship Game-X vs Y

Or something like that! :)
