It helps the P5 and tv networks

These conferences and networks want to maximize revenue for a TV only season. They are hoping they make playing difficult for other conferences. They don’t want fans at venues; they want people at home watching broadcasts on ESPN, Fox, ABC and CBS. They also want a large inventory of conference games showing on their conference networks. Canceling out of conference games helps with their objectives. It certainly makes no sense that Georgia Tech traveling to play Syracuse is somehow safer than Gardner Webb traveling to Atlanta. It is not about science. It is about money and monopoly power.
