I don't have any reason not to see Ahlers succeed at QB but

I think unless the OL greatly improves in pass protection next year, his football career ends at ECU. The young man is a football player first and foremost, his position on the roster just happens to be QB. He would be the first to try and run through a brick wall for this university's football team and his team mates.
Look at what Mac Brown did in Crapel Hole with their returning QB right after Mackie got there. That kid was placed on defense as a LB and was a star LB, maybe even their defensive MVP.
