An expanded playoff is NOT about determining the champion.
It’s about the NCAA sanctioning an inclusive playoff that provides equal opportunity to each conference and the 130 schools that meet the qualifications of membership in FBS (Division I-A) football. Such an expanded playoff would include the champion of each conference and perhaps at-large (e.g. 6 at-large teams selected based on an unbiased computer algorithm) teams to round out the playoff. Going in this direction would result in a much larger pie of TV money that is desperately needed by most of the 130 schools. It would mitigate the negative recruiting practices that began with the advent of the BCS, which is what irritated Steve Logan so much that I think it eventually resulted in giving up at ECU. And, over time, more parity will be achieved due to more equal distribution of TV money and less negative recruiting. The final result will likely be the reformation of more regional conference alignments, which will reduce travel costs and increase rivalry interest among fans.
