The FCS model is the way to go.
24 teams. Ten conference champs. 14 at large bids. No conference allowed to have more than 4 teams. Let’s make it a National championship, not the Alabama invitational which it is now practically. Also, have to consider the bowls. There would have to be a bowl round that included the NY6 +2 others.
So, for example, the first round would put 9-24 seeds competing to move on to a bowl round which would include the top 8 seeds. After that, the eight bowl champs would move on to an 8 team tournament of champions (bowl champs), that would eventually crown a National champ. They could play those games at the NY6 locations. I like the 24 team format. The FCS model is fair. I don’t think it’s too far reaching.
As for the occasional blowout from a team like this years Alabama, it’s going to happen. They stomped #2 Ohio State. The important thing is to allow for everyone to have a shot when they suit up to start the the season, even if the chips are stacked heavily against them.
