The cartel was designed not to determine a true national champion. Hell, the current system really isn’t any better than before the BCS. The whole point of those executives who designed the BCS on the back of a napkin at a restaurant was to create a marketing advantage with barriers of entry (in other words, a cartel or monopoly) that would result in cornering the vast majority of TV revenue and create recruiting advantages over the conferences not in the cartel. It’s worked to perfection because a large percentage of fans, even those fans of non-cartel schools use the marketing labels and argue about somehow getting an elusive spot in the BCS and now the CFP. Even ADs and coaches of non-cartel schools like ECU use those labels because they hope someday to get hired by a cartel school.
