He did look like he could mash the ball. He was hitting with a wooden bat

and the ball was jumping off of his bat. I would say based on what I saw that he was offered based on his batting potential. He is not a bad defensive player but not exactly polished. I even noticed on the throws from the outfield that his right foot goes behind his left foot. That is odd and makes for a weaker and/or off balance throw.
