Take money out of the equation

which is impossible to do, unfortunately. The AAC is not adding six programs from CUSA. They add 6 markets. That's the problem for all of us, the fan, who is only interested in what collegiate athletics should be about, competition, being the best on the field. The sole focus for the commercial advertisers will spend their advertising budgets, not who can become the next Boise St.. That's exactly how CUSA failed. They sell you on the notion that more cash will increase recruiting and facilities and elevate your brand.....that's not the case most of the time. Its only justification, nothing more. Plenty of programs in power conferences you can reference that only collect the paycheck. What's the point if that's all you do?

Look at the game last night between Coastal and App St.. That defines exactly what is missing. Sold out crowd in the mountains of NC. A great game that comes down to a last second field goal. Fans rushing the field. Not one concern of market size, athletic budgets or bigger ESPN payouts. It was just a great game and fan experience that we all want back. That's what happened to ECU, Tulsa, USF, etc....Good competition was sacrificed for cash. How many true ECU fans really get to enjoy TowneBank Tower? Was it worth the cost? If you could give up $5 million a year for what last nights game represented, would you? The Commissioner, Chancellor and AD chase the money, getting all of us further away from enjoying football like the Peach Bowl in 92(I was there). Heck, I was at Carter-Finley in 87. Valvano was not happy after that game......You have to miss that. I do.

I miss the ECU v USM games more than the others when CUSA threw in the towel in 2013. Games against Charlotte, ODU, FAU mean absolutely nothing. They cause more damage to a program in the end. Those programs have zero tradition, no history, zero wins against traditional power programs, no fans....just commuter schools. UAB just opened a $170 million dollar stadium and its half empty by game 2. Whats the point? Build a $70 million dollar stadium like USA and enjoy the experience.

USM is leaving what has contributed to our decade of regression(that, and bad hires). We are now chasing regional competition to boost the fan and campus experience we lost. Baseball will benefit and continue to grow. Football attendance will benefit as well. We won't get that $50 million arena renovation for our basketball team and thats ok. We get a financial boost in media payout in the Sun Belt and we are looking forward to games like we saw last night. Good luck, Pirates. We need to get a baseball series on the books. I think your AD has some ties to USM and should make that happen.
