Some history about State and UNC...

“But as college basketball emerged as the leading sport in North Carolina, it also became entangled with problems related to money and fan hysteria. Intense competition for recruits led to irregularities. Case’s program at NC State was clouded by sanctions placed on it after the National Collegiate Ath- letic Association (NCAA) imposed a four-year ban on postseason play after charging that Case offered gifts and cash to Louisiana basketball sensation Jackie Moreland in 1956. At UNC, McGuire also came under sanction (in 1961) for recruiting violations. Even more serious were the point-shaving scandals of the early 1960s, in which players at both UNC and NC State were bribed to manipulate the margin of victories so that gamblers could beat the point spread. In 1961, a point-shaving scandal forced McGuire out, but his replacement, assistant coach Dean Smith, went on to build a basketball dynasty at UNC. Per- haps the worst display of point shaving involved the Dixie Classic, a holiday bas- ketball tournament run by NC State at Reynolds Coliseum. The Dixie, which first ran in 1949, attracted the best teams in the nation, was the subject of fanat- ical fan interest, and generated some $31,000 in annual profits for the State’s basketball program. Between 1949 and 1961, the Dixie Classic drew 713,800 spectators. In May 1961, after it was disclosed that gamblers had infiltrated the tournament, UNC system president William Friday cancelled the Dixie Classic and sharply reduced the playing schedules of both UNC and NC State.“
