They once ruled Hampton Roads, VA Beach Tidewater when it came to recruiting but most of the talent in that area only remembers Michael Vick and never saw him play at VT so Hokies don't carry nearly the influence they once did. Northern VA talents also goes elsewhere. VT might make an occasional run but they probably never replicate what they did in the 90s ever again. I don't know what is worse for a fan base, hoping to get to a new level or being like VT and almost getting to that elite level once and thinking you can get back to it. Texas fans have been waiting a long time with way more money and way more brand recognition as have Notre Dame fans, Tennessee Fans, Florida Fans, FSU Fans, Miami Fans, USC Fans, etc..etc... Tough to build an elite program and stay on top but you have to regularly finish in top 10 of recruiting despite some fans thinking stars mean nothing. . There is a reason VT is where they are

Some decent recruiting classes normally 4-6 Four Stars and then the rest 3 stars. Classes like that if they mature can win 8-9+ games in a season but not the level of talent required to be an Elite College Football Program .
