Flying Under The Radar

The Buc football program is still at tree top level but the performance Friday can change that dramatically. A down side of a Pirate win is the stock of the H&H boys goes up immeasurably. In the case of HA, he will likely make the same decision as to his future. As for Houston, his name may begin to surface on a few vacancy lists though likely not as to short lists as yet.

The ECU head pigskin position may well never be a destination job but successful coaches here need to be mindful of stepping stone history for those aspiring to bigger and better. To recap other than Pat Dye, it’s been practically a consistent spiral, south. Mike McGee, though only one season here with a losing record returned to his alma mater at Duke for 8 seasons as head coach amassing a stellar 37-47 record or .443; his succor Sonny Randle ignominiously departed Greenville returning to his alma mater at Virginia only to be fired after 2 seasons with a 5-17 record or .227 (including an humiliating 61-10 loss to ECU in the ‘🍎 Bowl’ I was pleased to have witnessed), and he went on the Marshall as a 3 season HC compiling a 5-27 record, for an overall dismal .164 average at those two institutions; Bill Lewis was fired after 2 seasons with Georgia Tech with a combined 11-19 record or .366; Skip at South Fla. separated after 3 seasons with a 16-21 record or .432, though he’s done better after 9 seasons at La.Tech at 64-49 or .566. Still, not exactly a picture of simmering success with an winning percentage average of .385 for that foursum.

Whatever, the chips will fall as they will but as Randle pointedly said after his starting place-kicker at ECU abruptly quit, ‘the sun will rise in the East tomorrow.’ And so it will, with ECU football. End of expose. Arrrg
