One little passing tidbit from The UC game last night.

When we moved to Cincy in ‘95, UC basketball was #1. The basketball arena was packed for all games whether school was in or not. Tons of support from the community and UC alums in attending home basketball games.

UC football was terrible. Their teams were bad. As a result, there weren’t many fans in the stands, extremely cheap ticket prices, and getting very little press from the local newspaper. In fact, not too long ago, fans were forced to purchase football season tickets in order to be given the privilege to purchase basketball season tickets. As a result, many football season tickets sold and not used. Crazy, I know. But that’s the way it was.

UC football is bustin’ it out now, as witnessed by their recent winning ways and national attention while the basketball team is tracking rearward. Want proof? There were MANY empty seats at 53rd Arena last night.

When “Hugs” left UC for WVU, I noticed the slide in UC basketball attendance even though they’ve had several NCAA playoff teams. And for the record, all of this significantly predates anything related to Covid. And it’s continued, particularly with the rise of Bearcat football.

The ebbs and flows of athletics at UC is for real.
