I’ve got a friend that’s in the thick of all this
He said he’s become even more slimy in the last few weeks.
As teams have lost starters or depth to transfers they are essentially shopping on other teams rosters. This started with guys that wanted to move up the totem pole, guys that didn’t like the coach or the coach got fired, or playing time. The next evolution is a player is happy with his situation but gets courted with an NIL deal to new home where there is a need at his position.
The example was:
Say Kentucky loses their PG and need one and decide they like the PG at Florida. The kid at UF is happy there though. So sports agents of UK assistants along with the boosters NIL funding program craft a package for the UF kid. The agent takes the deal to the kids AAU coach. The AAU coach pitches it to the kid. The agent and AAU coach get a slice off the NIL deal. The kid goes to Kentucky and Calapari can get in front of the media and say they just got lucky on this one.
A school can essentially buy a player who is happy at his current school. He said this situation is unique to college bball because the back channel of the AAU coach is already in place and has been for years. The other thing is you only do it for 1-2 kids and you transform your team. It’s not as easy with football where there’s not a back channel like AAU and 1 player cant transform the team… Tom Brady still requires a good OL. I told my buddies that are big into ACC bball to enjoy the last few years of their favorite sport.
