Early on, I would have agreed with you.

but schools, especially those within the SEC and Big 10 have already changed the rule. In the name of "helping" the student athlete those schools are now funneling all the money for NIL through a fund they are handling which means it wasn't for the good of the student at all.

So while the donor may be out the money, it was the school in the end that should get the blame. They chose who would wear the uniform, the donor didn't.

I have come around also to saying we should cut scholarships in this climate. Pay the NIL money to the athlete and let them pay tax on all of it and then pay for room, board, and tuition like any other student with after tax dollars and agree in writing to maintain certain academic standards in terms of progress to a degree and grades, or else be made ineligible to play or be paid for that failure. And of course have that academic accountability measured by years in college if they choose to portal several times so no matter where they go they get or lose credit for what they did or didn't do at their last stop.

If this doesn't remain about getting a college degree then drop the college name from the team and call it whatever, let ECU sell tickets and rent the stadium to the Eastern NC Pirate football club if it is going to just be about football going forward.

I'm not a big giver to ECU. My wife and I figured it up one day and I guess we have given them enough to buy a couple of Surburbans through the years, but for us it was all about student athletes. She enjoys Cliff's boys on ESPN+, but for the reasons I no longer care about the NBA or the NFL I'm losing interest in ECU for the same reasons.
