Idle stops the prop; however, certain boats can be very tricky finding it…


On some boats I’ve owned, you can try to put it in idle and easily overshoot or undershoot it if you try to do it just by feel. Unless you confirm by looking, you can be in gear and not know it. Turning the key to off is good practice. Then there’s no doubt.
