Minges experts - question for you.

I seem to recall reading several years ago on BYB that Minges was designed in such a way to allow a “raising of the roof” for expansion. If we did that, we could have an overhead scoreboard/videoboard like most of the college basketball world has. Is there any truth to that?

I was just reading on another board about good basketball arenas that people have been to, and one that sticks out to me is ODU’s arena.

“The Ted” (Ted Constant Convocation Center) has a similar capacity as Minges (8,000+ for basketball, 9,000+ for concerts)...
It is a GORGEOUS, first class facility. I went with the PC to the ECU/ODU game back when we had Kemp, Paul, etc. I was blown away at how nice it was. I would love ECU to one day have something similar.

Looking at the numbers, it says it was $47M to build, and that in 2017 dollars, it would translate to $63.9M.

That seems like ridiculous, imaginary money.. hard to comprehend, until I see how much we are spending on the DFS upgrades. Is such a venture worth the money? It makes me think about the potential sale of the Carolina Panthers. One of the ownership groups that is bidding wants to build a dome down near Carowinds - to be able to host a super bowl one day, but also to be able to earn revenue year round by hosting other types of events that an outdoor stadium can’t acommodate.

Do you think ECU would take that into account? Right now, Minges isn’t a very attractive venue for concerts (outside of Parmalee doing us a favor) and maybe a WWE house show. The money that could be earned by building an attractive, modern venue could really outweigh the initial investment, IMO.

A good coach, an improved team with measurable results (hopefully it will happen), and the prospect of year-round revenue, I think, would be more than enough to start a capital campaign, don’t you think?

I’d write a check... but it wouldn’t likely be enough to pay for the mirrors in one of the men’s rooms. Ha
